Two hundred years of pressed flowers
The society holds eighteen thousand herbarium sheets, scanned over a decade by volunteers and stored in a spreadsheet nobody could search. Fieldnotes Atlas is the public archive built on top of that work.
The design borrows from the sheets themselves: a cream page, a single serif for Latin names, and a mono label for collector, date and location. The specimen is always the largest thing on screen.
Browsing by accident
Search is for people who know what they want. Most visitors do not, so the home page is a slow, infinite drift of specimens sorted by the month they were collected, which means the archive quietly changes with the seasons.
The atlas is now cited in three papers and one wedding invitation.
